Olomouc is the fifth largest town in the Czech Republic with the population about 110,000. • It is situated in Central Moravia on the rivers Morava and Bystřice. • It is a very old town founded in the 9th century. • Nowadays it is an important industrial town and transport crossroads.
Olomouc is also an important centre of education and culture. • Palacký University with 7 faculties is the second oldest university in our country.
Olomouc is a centre for sporting life too. There are sports stadiums, sports halls, swimming pools, tennis courts, ice rinks, gymnasiums, fitness centres. The best-known sports clubs are HC that plays the first ice-hockey league, and Sigma that plays the first football league.
Sightseeing • Olomouc is the second largest historical town preserve in the Czech Republic. There are many famous sights and cultural monuments.
St Wenceslas Cathedral At the end of the last century it was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style. Its big spire is 100 metres high. In 1306 the last member of the Přemyslid family, Václav the Third, was murdered at the Olomouc Castle.
The oldest of them is the Premyslid Palace with Romanesque windows from the 11th century. • Next to the Palace there is a big building of St • Wenceslas Cathedral. At the end of the last century it was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style. Its big spire is 100 metres high. On the opposite hill, at PREDHRADÍ, there is the Archbishop´s Residence, a Baroque palace with an 85 metres long facade. Old canon´s houses from the 17th century are nowadays university buildings.
