  1. Teach Your Children Well Family Day 2009

  2. Since children are our future… • What will our future hold? • Will it be secure? • Will it be peaceful? • Will it be stable? • Will there be wisdom?

  3. Crosby, Stills and Nash implore: “Teach your children well…Teach your children what you believe in. Make a world that we can live in.” How about it? • What are the responsibilities of parents and children for real growth?

  4. What God Has Done… • “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16

  5. Ecclesiastes 11:5 -- As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.

  6. God provides the way for us to live… • Psalm 90:1-3 -- Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men.“ • 12 -- Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

  7. Deuteronomy 8:6 -- Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him. We can We must Walk in God’s ways!

  8. What Parents Should Do… • Romans 1:31 -- …they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. • “Without natural affections” • Probably speaking of the attitude of pagans to their children who would actually sacrifice them to their gods • Parents should love their children, richly, deeply.

  9. Parents should train their children… • Proverbs 22:6 -- Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

  10. Teach Them About God and Christ • Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

  11. Nurture them. • Retrain them as the world exerts its pressure against them.

  12. What Children Must Do… • Obey Your Parents • Ephesians 6:1 -- Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

  13. Choose friends wisely • Proverbs 13:20 -- He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

  14. Be careful how you live • Ephesians 5:15-16 -- Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
