Research Methodology EPH 7112 LECTURE 8: VALIDATION
Contents • Validation • Compute Performance • Draw Conclusions • Peer Review
Objectives • Objective of Validation phase is • To decide whether the objective of the task has been achieved • Based on formal conclusions • And rigorous peer review
Compute Performance • Reduced results in Synthesis • Scientific Method stepwise refinement • Performance metrics may need to be revised if • Not suitable • Do not validate hypothesis
Null Hypothesis • Statement of hypothesis that refers to a single, unambiguous value • Eg: The average fuel efficiency of the new engine is 40 mpg • Open-ended: The average fuel efficiency of the new engine exceeds 40 mpg
Rejection Confidence • A measure of rejection of the null hypothesis
Draw Conclusions • Two kinds of conclusions • Formal conclusions • Informal observations
Peer Review • Knowledge offered without peer review is unacceptable • Takes many forms: • Conferences • Journals • Online-Journals • Letters
