  1. Microsoft Office Project Server 2007: Server Administration Jean-Francois LeSaux Lead Architect, EPM Global Practice Microsoft Corporation jeanfl@microsoft.com

  2. Webcast SeriesWhat to expect • Solution Overview and System Elements • Solution Elements and Data Flow • Workload Scenarios and Reference Architecture • Network Communication • Server Administration • Maintenance and Monitoring • Deployment into a Sharepoint Server Intranet Farm • Disaster Recovery • Virtualization

  3. Prerequisite Knowledge • Deployment of Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 as a proof of concept • Review Technet and MSDN material • http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303399.aspx • http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/aa905469.aspx Level 300

  4. What We Will Cover • Review the logical architecture • Design Goals, Farm Concepts • Sharepoint Central Administration tools and best practices • Shared Service Provider Administration tools and best practices • Project Web Access Administration tools and best practices

  5. Design Goals - Topology • NO MORE TOPOLOGY RESTRICTIONS!!! • Servers have Roles • Web Front End (WFE) • Application Server • Database Server (Farm agnostic) • You can create a Farm of any size of each Server Role (see below) • There are some guidelines and best practices • http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/2aa12954-2ea7-475c-9dce-663f543820811033.mspx?mfr=true

  6. Design Goals - Administration • Windows SharePoint Services • Simplicity • Consistency • Extensibility • Microsoft Office Project Server and Windows SharePoint Services • Resource Optimization • Role Delegation

  7. Three Tier Administration Web-based Role- & Task-Delineated Controlled Delegation Secure Isolation Design Goals - Delegation Central Admin IT Pro Farm-level Shared Services Admin IT pro Admin Pro Instance-level Project Server Admin Admin Pro PMO Pro Site-level

  8. Farm Concept • SharePoint Farm • Servers • Application servers have all services installed • WFEs are always mirrors • Configuration DB: Heart & soul of the farm • Takes place of registry • 1 per farm • SPTimer Service: Heartbeat of farm (2 tier) • SharePoint Administration Service • Used to propagate configuration changes across farm - as box admin • Shared Services • A grouping of Services for Sites to use. • Admin sites • Central administration: 1 per farm • Shared services administration: “special” content site

  9. Farm Concepts Windows SharePoint Services SQL IIS SERVICES

  10. Farm AdministrationGoals • Reduce administrator time • Quickly identify what must be done • Rapidly locate UI to do what’s needed • Single point administration • Manage the application • Single change updates all servers in farm • Extensible platform for SharePoint admin • Consistent UI experience for all products

  11. Farm Administration Tasks • Administrative task list • Informs operators what must be done • Explains action needed, and provides link to UI • Home page topology view • Quick view of farm servers and what is running on them • Services on Server page • Manage the components running on a single server • Flat menu structure • Operations: tasks affecting farm resource usage • App Management: tasks specific to a single application or servicewithin the farm • Security trimming reduces UI clutter • Remote administration • Web-based administration UI • Timer-based system updates

  12. Central Administration

  13. Farm Administration Best Practices • Create separate system accounts to manage separate farms • Request non-expiring passwords for the system accounts

  14. demonstration Sharepoint Farm Administration • Tool: Central Administration Console • Administration Tasks

  15. Shared Service Provider • Shared services • Grouped, high-value, resource intensive services • One to many per farm • Inter-farm capable (MOSS only) • Shared Services must: • expect to be used by multiple Web applications from multiple farms • make themselves able to be surfaced in and managed via SharePoint Central Administration • allow themselves to be managed by delegated administrators • Windows SharePoint Services doesn’t ship with shared services, but Microsoft Office SharePoint Server provides many • SSP = Shared Service Provider = A Site that Provides MOSS Shared Services

  16. Shared Service Provider • SSPDefault == 1st SSP • Can be changed to different SSP • Cannot be deleted • New, existing web apps auto-associated • Content web applications • ALWAYS associated to 1 and only 1 SSP* • Security implications • Content app pool granted rights across SSP • Disassociation: Accounts NOT auto-cleaned up • Account runs the ADSync and Cube Building

  17. Shared Service Provider • Customer benefits • Resource optimization • Security isolation • Flexibility • Delegation of administration • Power users administer Shared Service Instance • ≠ Central admin rights • Can be shared across farms • Watch-out • Farm: SSP web app’s application pool account cannot be Network Service • 1 SSP admin site allowed in a single web application • \admin\ssp • Central admin operators ≠ SSP site administrators • Closely manage security when switching associations

  18. SSP Administration Tasks • Create and Manage PWA sites • Manage other SSP related features if Sharepoint Server 2007 is installed

  19. SSP Administration Tool

  20. demonstration SSP Administration • Tool: Central Administration Console • SSP Administration Tasks

  21. PWA Administration Tasks • Manage Project Server Security • Manage Enterprise Data • Database Administration • Look and Feel • Cube Settings • Time and Task Management • Queue Management • Operational Policies

  22. PWA Administration

  23. PWA Administration Best Practices • Allow only a limited number of users to administer PWA • Changes made in PWA Administration are global and affect all users and all objects in the PWA instance

  24. demonstration Project Web Access Administration • Tool: PWA Server Settings • PWA Administration Tasks

  25. Supportability • Check TechNet for deployment guidance • Stay up to date with http://support.microsoft.com
