PERii in Nepal • Began in 2003 • NepJOL created in order to strengthen and communicate national research • Part of a larger group of Asian JOLs: • BanglaJOL • PhilJOL • SLJOL • VJOL

History of NepJOL • Article Database started in 2000 (Articles from Science Journals published from Nepal) • Nepal Journals Online (NepJOL) was initiated in June 2006 • Officially launched in September 2007 • Supported by the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) • 4 workshops held to train editors • Currently 51 journals across wide spread of subjects • 195 Tables of Contents • 2866 articles with 2214 of the articles are available in full text (PDF)
NepJOL (www.nepjol.info) Objectives: • To promote the awareness and use of Nepal-published journals in all disciplines by providing access to TOCs, abstracts and full text online • To strengthen local publications • To provide a range of online full text access models for journals, from complete open access to subscription access, with hybrid models of restricted access Key Challenges for Nepal • Power • Political instability • Irregular publication of journals • Lack of computer literacy
Inclusion of Journals on NepJOL • Journals identified, or they approach NepJOL • Criteria for selection • scholarly content with original research • peer reviewed and quality controlled • published within Nepal • Sign an agreement of responsibilities • INASP registers information about the journal • Principle contact • Editorial Board • Instructions to authors • Content then loaded by either: • INASP • TUCL • Journal editors
Online Submission on NepJOL Journals can allow authors to submit their articles online • Authors register on the site • Manuscript is submitted using a simple 5-stage process • See instructions at www.inasp.info/jol-users-workshop • Editors can use online peer-review process • Saves money (postage etc.) • Keeps a history of all actions for each manuscript • Easier management of remote reviewers

Use (Article View) Statistics 1.2 million articles have been viewed Nov 2007-July 2010. Himalayan Journal of Science has the highest (177,000) partly because it has the largest number of articles on NepJOL.
Average views per article This measure is related to the number of articles each journal has on the site. Journal of Nepal Business Studies has the highest average views per article with 2200.

Future plans for NepJOL • Increase the number of journals included • Ensure that content is kept up to date • Encourage journals to allow authors to submit manuscripts online • Encourage journal editors to use the full online peer-review system • Encourage journal editors to load their own content • Move the management of the system to Nepal
Conclusion • A database of +2200 full text articles published in Nepal • 51 journals included • Visibility of Nepal research has increased • Journal editors starting to use online management system
