History of Debrecen • Firstmentioned in writing in the 13th century. • Market town rankin 1361. • Free royal cityrank in 1693. • Throughout its history, it was the place of the Parliament twice: 1848-49, and in 1944. • For the first time in January 1849the revolutionary Government moved here fromPest-Buda here, and became the capital of the country – with the words fromKossuth itbecame„The Major City of Hungarian freedom„. • During World War II Debrecen got huge losses. In 1944, during the August bombings thehalfof thebuildings destroyed, a further 20% of them are damaged.
