Aviation – Pilot Licence Introduction Christine Liu Sydney Aviation Club 21/08/2016 https://djpilotblog.wordpress.com
Pilot Licence Types • Recreational pilot licence (RPL) • Private pilot licence (PPL) • Commercial pilot licence (CPL) • Air transport pilot licence (ATPL) • Glider pilot licence (GPL) • Balloon licence holders • Overseas licence holder • Australian Defence Force member DJpilot
Recreational pilot licence (RPL) The RPL is the first step for most pilots. During the course, students learn how to handle the aircraft (flying straight and level, flying a circuit, take-offs and landings, emergency procedures, basic instrument flying) It authorizes pilots to fly light, single-engine aircraft as the pilot-in-command independently of a flying school, without supervision. RPL Requirement • You must be at least 15 years old. • 25 hours total flight time, which includes: • 20 hours of dual flight training • 5 hours solo flight (PIC) • Pass RPL theory exam (this can be set and conducted by your flying school) • Class 1 or 2 medical certificate or a recreational aviation medical practitioner’s certificate to take RPL flight test For more information about RPL, please refer to the link. Private pilot licence (PPL) A private pilot licence (PPL) is a licence that allows a holder to pilot an aircraft as pilot-in-command or co-pilot when the aircraft is being operated in a private operation or the holder is receiving flying training. It allows you to fly "in command" anywhere in Australia, and many parts of the world. DJpilot
PPL Requirement • You must be at least 17 years old • Pass a PPL theory exam • Pass a PPL flight test for the licence and category rating • 40 hours total flight time, which includes: • 5 hours of general flight as pilot-in-command (PIC) • 5 hours cross-country as PIC • 2 hours instrument flight • Pass a Class 2 medical examination For more information about RPL, please refer to the link. Commercial pilot licence (CPL) A commercial pilot licence (CPL) authorises you to conduct private and commercial operations (refer to sub-regulation 2(7)(d) of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988). You can be the co-pilot in any operation, and the pilot-in command in any operation except the following: • multi-crew aircraft in charter or regular public transport operations • an aeroplane certified for single-pilot operations with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of more than 5700kg in regular public transport operations • turbojet aeroplanes with a MTOW of more than 3500kg in regular public transport operations DJpilot
CPL Requirement • You must be at least 18 years old • Pass a CPL theory exam • Pass a CPL flight test for the licence and category rating • 200 hours total flight time for non-integrated course, or 150 hours for non-integrated course, which includes: • 70 hours total as pilot-in-command (PIC) • 20 hours cross-country PIC • 10 hours instrument flight (5 hours may be in a simulator) • Pass a Class 1 medical examination For more information about CPL, please refer to the link. Air transport pilot licence (ATPL) An ATPL is required to be the pilot-in-command of a multi-crew aircraft, be it a five seat Cessna Citation I or the worlds largest passenger aircraft - the Airbus A380. The ATPL has two components: • Theory examinations • Aeronautical experience A pass of all theory examinations provides you with what is termed a "Frozen ATPL" - this being a requirement for application and entry to all major airlines. ATPL Requirement • You must be at least 21 years old • Pass a ATPL theory exam • Pass a ATPL flight test for the licence and category rating • 1500 hours total flight time, which includes: • 750 hours in an aeroplane, which includes: • 250 hours PIC and ICUS, which includes: • 70 hours PIC • 200 hours cross country, which includes: • 100 hours PIC or ICUS • 75 hours instrument, which includes: • 45 hours in flight • 100 hours night PIC or co-pilot • The other 750 hours may include: • 25 hours synthetic trainer time • 75 hours flight simulator time • Up to 200 hours Flight Navigator and/or Flight Engineer time • In addition to the flight hour experience requirements you must: • Hold a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) • Hold or have held a Command Instrument Rating (Multi-engine) For more information about ATPL, please refer to the link.
