Who should use this presentation & read code Managers of staff & staff, and those responsible for visitors and contractors on STFC sites, who use ‘dangerous substances’ which may generate explosive atmospheres. Common examples include Solvents; Paints; Flammable Gases; and Dusts from machining & sanding operations etc.

  2. Introduction to SHE Code 20 “Controlling Explosive and Flammable Gases and Dusts” STFC Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group

  3. Key features • The Code addresses the requirements of the Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 • The Code establishes a framework to carry out simple assessments for: • small quantities of flammable substances; and • Controls for cylinders of flammable gas • For more complex processes contact SHE Group for advice from specialist consultants

Key points • For simple processes the risk assessment should consider : • The hazardous properties of a substance; • The way in which it is stored or used; and • The possibility of explosive atmospheres occurring • Potential ignition sources. • Also: • The control measures to remove or control risks; • Identification & classification of hazardous areas / zones; and • Procedures to deal with incidents involving dangerous substances • Then: • Ensure employees are properly trained and informed
