Chapter 29.5 Primary Structure of Roots AP Biology Spring 2011
Internal Structure Of Roots • The root’s structural organization is laid out in a seed • The primary root pokes through the seed coat first
Internal Structure Of Roots • Cells in the apical meristem divide and then differentiate into the: • Root cap • Epidermis • Ground tissues • Vascular tissues Root
Internal Structure Of Roots • Root cap: protects the apical meristem of the soft actively growing root as it pushes through the soil
Internal Structure Of Roots • Root epidermis: extensions of root hairs, increase the roots surface area available for absorption of water and solutes
Internal Structure Of Roots • Vascular Tissues: form a vascular cylinder arranged as a central column of primary xylem and phloem • Pericycle: surrounds vascular cylinder and consist of parenchyma cells that actively divide perpendicular to the root axis giving rise to lateral roots • Endodermis: innermost layer of the cortex, surrounds the pericycle and forces water into the cytoplasm of root cells
Taproot and Fibrous Root Systems • Taproot system: • Most eudicots have a taproot • Consisting of the primary root and its lateral branches
Taproot and Fibrous Root Systems • Fibrous root system: • Most monocots have a fibrous root • Primary root is replaced by adventitious roots with lateral branches • Adventitious roots arise from stem and lateral roots branch from them • Adventitious refers to any plant structure that forms at an unusual place, relative to most species
