  3. Choosing a journal • Read widely and keep note of appropriate journals • Check the ARC list and subsets of main areas • Read the advice to authors in chosen journals

  4. Publication style • Buy an up to date copy of the APA Publication Manual and learn to use it correctly • Teach your students to use it • Practice correct use when you mark student assignments • Also use the Australian Government Style Manual and the Macquarie Dictionary

  5. ARC dictates for refereed publications • Ranking of journals by ARC • Definition of research • Originality, contribution to human knowledge • Note the emphasis on research as product and not on research as process

  6. Nature of journal articles • A discrete entity? • Length of title and keyword density? • Numbering of figure and tables? • Publishing your literature review? • Rewriting from chapter to journal format? • Using the name of your Supervisor?

  7. Writing and reviewing These two skills complement each other. For writers aiming to improve their papers, a knowledge of the reviewing process is important. For reviewers, a knowledge of common ways to recommend improvements to authors is also important.

  8. Responding to reviewers’ comments Keep working on article after submitting it. What is a positive review? How do you respond? What is a critical review? What do you do when reviewers criticise your paper? Discussion

  9. Developing your paper towards publication • Try out your ideas with colleagues • Present at a local Forum, such as the WAIER Forum or the Teaching and Learning Forum • Publishing at different levels • Abstract at Forum • Short paper or non-refereed paper • Journal publication
