This project led by Dr. Tanja Bueltmann at Northumbria University focuses on utilizing digital media as a tool for engaging with community groups and genealogists. Through platforms such as Twitter, a continuous dialogue is maintained throughout the research life cycle, fostering networking and engagement. The importance of quality over quantity in follower engagement is emphasized, with a focus on relevant research user interactions. Online outlets are embedded from the beginning, offering opportunities for reader contributions beyond commenting. The project showcases accessible research stories and aims to facilitate expat exchange and engagement with history. A rounded approach across platforms is used to enhance brand recognition. Valuable resources and tailored content are provided to enhance user experience, with a focus on personal and online engagement complementing each other. Co-production of knowledge is highlighted through live-streamed discussions and lasting accessible resources via YouTube channels. The project also facilitates the production of knowledge by offering an engagement platform for research users to contribute.

Engagement, Co-production and Exchange: working with community groups and genealogists Dr Tanja Bueltmann @scotsdiaspora / @clioexpat
Digital media as engagement tools • make use of Twitter etc only if continuous: tweeting about research / project throughout entire life cycle • Twitter is great for research networking etc, but if used for engagement purposes too that can be an issue: research users unlikely to be interested in academic chit-chat • I’m firmly of the view that it’s more important to have relevant research user followers (and thus perhaps a smaller number), than a large number of followers per se
Digital media as engagement tools • embedd online outlets from the outset • don’t just have ‘a site’: focused platform for engagement • provide opportunity for readers to contribute beyond commenting • offer tools they can use Let’s look at some examples ….
Locating the Hidden Diaspora project • accessible research stories from whole team • possibility for readers to contribute http://digitalcommunity.englishdiaspora.co.uk/
European, Ethnic & Expatriate project • my new project • to include platform for expat exchange and engagement with history of expats http://www.ethnicandexpatriate.co.uk/
‘Rounded’ approach across platforms • importance of developing a ‘brand’ across platforms to increase level of recognition
Offer something specific/usable • resources that research users can explore/utilize
Offer something specific/usable • Resources research users can use
Tailored writing • tailored stories
Personal engagement ‘on the ground’ • complement personal engagement with online components
Personal engagement ‘on the ground’ • complement personal engagement with online components
Co-production of knowledge • live stream discussion on book exploring Scots in US • lasting resource: accessible via YouTube channel
Facilitating production of knowledge/resource generated by research users • offer engage-ment plat-form for research users http://mystory.thescottishdiaspora.co.uk
