Balance (in the headings) • Each heading and subheading should balance or match. If the first heading has a noun the second should too. • I. CHOOSE DESIRED COLLEGES • II. PREPARE APPLICATIONS • Choose and Prepare are both verbs- they match.
Coordinate • All headings should coordinate, and have the same level of significance. The same goes for the subheadings (which should be less significant than the headings). • I. Rules • Each heading should be divided into two or more parts. In other words for every Roman numeral I there must be a Roman numeral II, for every A. there must be a B. • I. COMPILE RESUME A. List Relevant Coursework B. List Work Experience C. List Volunteer Experience
Power Thinking • A simpler version of outlines. • To help students differentiate between main ideas and details • An organizational tool for reading, writing or studying
The Basics • Power 1- Main Ideas, Thesis Statements • Power 2- Support or details of number 1 • Power 3- Support or details of number 2 (or examples) • Power 4- Examples
For Example • Power 1- Triangles • Power 2- 3 sides, 3 angles • Power 3- Isosceles • Power 4- 2 sides are equal Power 3- Equilateral Power 4- all sides are equal
Activity • Create a power thinking map with a partner. • Pick a Power 1 idea (sports, food, countries, shapes) • Then fill in the rest of the chart (sports- types of sports; mall-types of stores) • Share with class if time.
