A Faith Built onSand • The Foolishness of Popular Religion in a Postmodern Age Chapter 5:“Playing Church”
Chapter 4:Outline • The Sad State of American Religion • Dumbing Down • Chilling Out • Having Fun
Introduction • God’s marvelous vision for the church... • The Temple of God • The Body of Christ • God’s Representatives • Weak & fallible
The Sad State of American Religion • The wrong emphasis. • The wrong source of approval. • The wrong source of counsel. • The wrong view of parenthood. • Convenient, user-friendly, culture-bound. • God chastens and warns those for whom He cares (Ezek. 18:30-32; Heb. 12:5; Rev. 3:19).
Dumbing Down • “My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). • Sentiment over soul-saving truth. • Watered down preaching • Uncontroversial. • Ignorance prevails. • Why do we believe what we do?
Dumbing Down • Weak Bible classes • “Pooling of ignorance” - Jack Lewis • Everyone gets to speak up, except God. • If the parents don’t know what they believe, how can they educate their children? • Irreparable harm by belittling, making fun of and speaking poorly of the church. • Low retention rate of children.
Chilling Out • The holy replaced with the relaxed and common. • Gimmicks (country line dancing, bar churches, etc). • Lack of a sense of holines in the presence of God. • No intention of growth. • Lesson from Israel: Worship required people to be ceremonially clean (Jn. 11:55; Ps. 51:1-2, 7-10; 2 Chron. 23:19). • Isa. 6:1-8; Rev. 1:17 • Heb. 12:28-29
Having Fun • Entertainment will not retain young people. • It cannot nourish and sustain. • It cannot cause one to grow. • It cannot compete with the world’s entertainment. • IT cannot lead people to take up the cross of Christ. • “Cultural forms do not make you relevant..truth makes you relevant.”
Having Fun • Only the word of God can... • ...build their faith (Jn. 20:30-31); • ...strengthen them (Rom. 16:25-27); • ...give them an inheritance (Acts 20:32). • We cannot justify any behavior just because it’s “for the children” or for “church growth.”
