  3. The Church of Christ was Built • On the day of Pentecost, Acts 2 • About 3,000 souls added together, Acts 2:41 • They continued together, Acts 2:42 • The Lord added to the church those being saved, Acts 2:47 • The church of Christ is not a denomination! 3

  4. The Church of Christ is NOT… • A denomination of believers(Jno. 17: 20-21; 1 Cor. 1:10) Eph. 4:4 • Ecclesiastical hierarchy • An afterthought of God,Eph. 3:10-11 • The building in which the church meets to worship 4

  5. The Church of Christ IS… • The assembly of the saved • Called out ones (ekklesia:ek, out of + kaleo, to call) • Congregation of Israel(Acts 7:38) • Riotous assembly(Acts 19:32, 41) • Governing body in Ephesus(Acts 19:39) 5

The Church of Christ IS… • Christ’s assembly of the saved (Acts 2:47; Heb. 12:23) • Called by the gospel to salvation,Mk. 16:15; Acts 2:39-41 (2 Ths. 2:13-14) • Called out of sin & darkness,1 Pet. 2:9-10 • Called to holiness, into fellowship & the kingdom,1 Cor. 1:2, 9; 1 Ths. 4:7; 2:12 • Subject to Christ in everything,Eph. 5:24 6

  7. Whose Church is it, Anyway? • “Church of Christ” denotes possession, Matt. 16:18 (Rom. 16:16; 1 Cor. 1:2; Heb. 12:23) • Denominations belong to men • Founded, structured & perpetuated by the will and wisdom of men (Col. 2:8, 20-23) • Church of Christ belongs to Christ 7

  8. The Church Belongs to Christ Because… • He built his church, Matt. 16:18 • Christ loved his church and died for her,Eph. 5:25-27 • Christ purchased his church with his blood, Acts 20:28 • The church is the body of Christ & he is its head, Col. 1:18 8

  9. The Church Belongs to Christ Because… • There is one body, Eph. 4:4 • Christ is the Savior of the body, Eph. 5:23 • The church of Christ is the fullness of Christ, Eph. 1:23 9

  10. Christ Built His Church on the “Rock” • He is the Christ, the Son of God, Matt. 16:18 (1 Cor. 3:11) • He is the Savior of the church, Eph. 5:23, 26-27 • He is the chief cornerstone, Eph. 2:20-21 (Acts 4:11-12) 10

Christ Built His Church on Pentecost (Acts 2) • His authority opened the kingdom to the lost, Matt. 16:18-19 (Acts 1:8; 2:21, 36-41, 47) • The church remains whenever the gospel is preached & souls obey, 1 Pet. 1:22-25 • Men fall away from the faith, 1 Tim. 4:1 • Called to return to God (Jas. 4:7-10) 11
