1. Introduction • DECT – Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephone • 3M Peltor DECT-Com II is a wireless duplex intercom system, operating on the 1.8 GHz DECT-frequencies, which is license free in most countries. • The products in the Peltor DECT-Com II family offer simple and efficient wireless duplex communication with up to 9 active users talking in full conference. • Due to low power output and high frequency, it is a short range communication system. The nominal working range is approximately 150 metres outdoors in line of sight from the base. The working range may be shorter due to actual environmental conditions.

2. System Overview

Main unit There are basically two main versions of the DECT-Com II main unit: • - Portable • Base/Portable • There is also an Extension Base/Portable (for link to external communications devices). This is rarely used.

New DECT-Com II Up to 9 simultaneous portable units in a conference logged on to a base unit, which can also accept a headset making a total of 10.

3. Out of the Box Start-Up • A DECT-Com II system needs to be charged for 12 hours before use. The following steps then need to be followed: • Select the base unit from the kit. This is the unit with a BLACK or RED antenna band. • Place the base unit in the vehicle cradle and position it as high up in the RRV cab as possible, using a Velcro pad or other suction kit on the glass.(Do not lie on floor of cab). • Connect the in vehicle cradle to the 12/24V Plug (Cigar Lead) and insert into the 12/24v socket in the OTP. Check the blue light on the cradle is on.(If the bluelight is not on get a fitter to check the 12v24v auxiallary socket, and if this is servicable you will need to change the cradle).

Plug in the throat mic or headset Switch on the BASE UNIT (ONLY). Always switch on the base unit before the portables. To do this, press and hold the “M” button until the LED starts to flash. WAIT for approximately 20 seconds. The green LED will now flash more slowly. You will hear “Group One”. The base set is now on. Now switch on the portable units. These have a GREENantenna band. To do this, press and hold the “M” button. With Auto talk enabled, you will then hear POWER ON. The green LED will start to flash. After a few seconds you will hear BASE1 GROUP 1. The Handset is now coupled with the base and working. The system is now operational

Where Auto talk has NOT been enabled in system set up: On All Units, to enable the microphone (to join the conference) double click the PTT1 button. The system is now operational

4. Basic Operations

Main unit Pressing the Mode button scrolls through the menu. (Some functions may be locked out depending on system set up, and ghost voice describes these options). • VOLUME • VOX –Voice Activated Microphone. • MICROPHONE

Main unit VOLUME Audio output level Steps 1 (min) – 5 (max) VOLUME BOOST The audio levels can be increased by +6 dB for “Ear-plug mode” . To activate press the “+” button and hold for 10 seconds. To deactivate press the “-” button and hold for 10 seconds.

Main unit VOX This changes the level at which sound activates the transmit throughout the system. In a noisy environment, this may need to be increased to a higher number. Use + and – to change the setting. The level selected will be heard through the headset. The options “OFF” and “OPEN” should not be selected.

Main unit MICROPHONE • Adaption to different microphone types: • Dynamic • Electret • Carbon • Low impedance • For throat mics and sidewinder headsets the Electret setting is required. For most other headsets Dynamic setting is required.

Main unit General antenna Units can be differentiated by a coloured plastic ring Black – Base/Portable with external input. Red – Base Portable without external input. Green - Portable Antenna attachment connector makes it possible to use different aerials such as an external omnidirectional vehicle antenna

Main unit There are three PTT buttons on the DECT units. Most units supplied to site should be paired and have Auto talk enabled, so the PTT buttons will be locked out. If Auto talk is NOT enabled, the PTT buttons are used for choosing TALK or LISTEN mode • A single press for listening • A double press for to speak and listen. PTT1 button is used for the Standard DECT conference, (Group 1)

Main unit Where units have not been sent out in paired sets: All Call (emergency call) By pressing + and – buttons simultaneously, it is possible to send a short message, in simplex mode, to all DECT-Com II units, if their base units are synchronised and in range of each other.

Main unit External equipment; radios, telephones etc. can be connected to suitable Base units. Communication on the external extensions is then selected by pressing PTT2 or PTT3 depending on programming. This is rarely used.

Out of Range • If the portable unit is close to the actual maximum working range from the base unit, a voice message “SIGNAL LOW“ is given in the connected headset. • When the portable unit is out of range from the base unit, a voice messages “SIGNAL LOW, OUT OF RANGE, OUT OF RANGE” is given in the connected headset. After 20 seconds, the Portable will try to find another base and a voice message “SEARCHING” is given. • When the portable unit is returned within range again, or another base is found, a voice message “BASE (number)” is given in the connected headset. • If Auto Talk Mode function is programmed (recommended), a portable unit, after being out of range, always returns to TALK MODE as soon as it is in range again.

For ease of use, it is recommended that: Units go to site already paired (paired units to be marked for example KIT1 1A/1B, KIT2 2A/2B, KIT3 3A/3B etc).TANDEMS to be marked for example KIT1 1A/1B/1C. This needs to be clearly marked and not scratched in. Units to go to site with parameters pre-set (microphone type, VOX and Volume). Pairing to be locked (to avoid complications caused by adding unit to a base). Auto talk enabled (this eliminates the need to double click PTT1 on set up and when unit returns to being in range having been out of range). Auto power off to be increased to 10 hours (out of the box setting is 4 hours). Base Selection option disabled (not required when a pairing is locked). Microphone type selection enabled (enables switching between throat mic and headset).UNLESS ELETRET HEADS OR THROAT MICS are being used. VOX level selection enabled (generally VOX 4 is adequate) unless using MT701H03

5. Advanced Operations Here we consider the following:- • Pairing a different Portable to a Base Unit - assuming it was not done during the “out of the box” configuration. • Searching for a Base Unit from a Portable. • Selecting a Different Base Unit from a Portable. • Starting a Base as a Portable or returning it to a Base.

Pairing a Portable with a Base. • MAKE A BASE UNIT READY FOR PORTABLES TO BE REGISTERED • Each Portable unit should be registered to a Base unit to be part of a DECT-Com II conference. • With the Base unit in LISTEN-ONLY and VOLUME MODE, double press on the [M] button to enter REGISTRATION MODE. • A Base unit in REGISTRATION MODE is indicated by a voice confirmation “SUBSCRIPTION ON” and the LED flashing slowly. • Repeat with the Portable – put the unit in LISTEN-ONLY and VOLUME MODE, double press on the [M] button to enter REGISTRATION MODE. • Both units will now start “Searching”. When complete, the Portable will confirm with “Base (number), Group 1”. • IMPORTANT -When all portable units are registered to the Base unit, exit REGISTRATION MODE by double pressing [M] button on the Base Unit.

Searching for a Base Unit from a Portable. • With the Portable – put the unit in Base Selection Mode - LISTEN-ONLY and VOLUME MODE. Then double press on the [M] button to enter REGISTRATION MODE. • A voice confirmation “SEARCHING” is given repeatedly, confirming that the unit is searching for active bases in range. • When a Base is found a voice confirmation “BASE (number), GROUP 1” is given. • To find more Bases, repeat this procedure again.

Selecting a Different Base Unit from a Portable. • In VOLUME MODE on a Portable unit in LISTEN MODE; double press on the [M] button to enter BASE SELECTION MODE. A voice confirmation “BASE” is given, urging it to select a Base. • Press [+] or [–] to cycle through the numbers of available Bases and an auto setting. A voice confirmation is given for each available choice: “AUTO”, “ONE”, “TWO” … Stop at your preferred Base number (or auto, see below). • Log on to the Base by pressing the [M] button and return to listen only menu items by pressing briefly on the [M] button. • A voice confirmation “LOGIN” followed by “BASE (number), GROUP 1” is given, confirming that the Portable unit is logged on to the Base with the given number as a listener in the given group. • If “AUTO” is chosen, the unit will log on to the Base with the latest used Base or the next available.

Starting a Base as a Portable or returning it to a Base. To start a Base as a Portable instead of a Base, switch on by pressing both the “M” button and the “-” button at the same time for 2 seconds. Remember to swap the colour coding ring from black or red (depending on the type of Base used) to green for Portable. To return it to it’s Base Specification, switch on by pressing both the “M” and “+” buttons at the same time for 2 seconds and revert the colour coding ring as required.

6. Advanced Programming • The system has the capability for more advanced programming combinations/scenarios. • These require a suitable programming holder and software and should be undertaken by experienced DECT II – com Technicians.

Some typical scenarios for Advanced Programming • Setting Auto Talk for all Portables. • Fixing Portables to specific Bases. • One Base with Several Portables but with the conference split into different groups. Each group can be contacted via PTT1, PTT2 or PTT3 • One Base with several Portables, with a Portable linked with a local radio system. • One Base with several Portables – Base linked via limo connector to PMR radio. • One Base with several Portables – Base linked via limo connector to mobile phone. • Two Bases linked via wire from headset connector. • Two Bases linked via wire from limo connector. • Two Bases with Portables moving between Bases.

Locked Buttons • To avoid unwanted changes in the settings of functions, it is possible to lock all buttons, so that only the ON/OFF function is active. This can be combined with the automatic talk mode function for best results. • A system for maximum 9 users, using only group 1, can be programmed in a configuration where all the portables always should be in talk mode. • Automatic talk mode makes it possible to ensure that all the members in the small group are always in full conference mode, as soon as they are in range of the base unit. • Portables can also be “locked” to specific Bases units making it impossible for them to be paired to other Bases.

Throat mic Throat mics (model J-TTMO3/NP2/NB) provide hygiene, noise reduction and the wearing of protective glasses advantages. As the microphones are tight against the user’s neck, only their voice is heard and outside noise is virtually eliminated. As there is no boom mic’, the hygiene issue with the boom mic’ is eliminated. The invisi tube earpieces should be personal issue. For Network Rail, these are available from High Motive through i-procurement

3M™ Peltor™ Headsets Available as a non-attenuation, medium , high attenuation and level dependant headset The same J11 connector connects any of these headsets to the Dect Com II Portables/Base or Base Extension units.

8. Hygiene & Maintenance • Microphone Tape - used to wrap around the boom mic. Removed after each wearer to prevent the spread of germs. • Hygiene Kits – replacement cushions and liners for earmuff type headsets. These should be replaced at least every 6 months. • Cool Pads – self adhesive pads which stick to the earmuff cushions to aid absorption of perspiration. • Periodically wipe with an anti bacterial wipe as used for cleaning a telephone.

Periodic software and firmware upgrades may be required. For best results, certain functions should be locked out or applied, such as Auto talk, eliminating the need to double click PTT1 to join a conference. Batteries will need replacing after 500 charges. Installation is simple. (Replacements will be available on the system to buy) Marking of each kit is highly recommended. Units should go to site already paired (paired units to be marked KIT1 1A/1B, KIT2 2A2/B,KIT3 3A/3B etc).TANDEMS to be marked kIT1 1/A1/B/1C (clearly marked and not scratched in).
