  2. What are the eight parts of speech? • Nouns • Pronouns • Adjectives • Verbs • Adverbs • Prepositions • Conjunctions • Interjections

  3. Nouns • A person, place, thing, or idea • A singular noun is just one; a plural noun is more than one (usually ends in “s”) • A common noun is general, while a proper noun is specific restaurant

  4. Possessive Nouns Show Ownership • Remember your PET PROJECT? • Singular nouns get an apostrophe plus an “s” Ex. Jacob’s, anyone’s, car’s • Plural nouns ending in “s” get just an apostrophe Ex. students’ grades, dancers’ costumes, the Sterns’ house

  5. Pronouns • “Stunt doubles” for nouns: he, she, it, they, them, ours, theirs

  6. Adjectives • Describing words that modify nouns • How would you describe how you are feeling about summer vacation? • eager excited thrilled

  7. Verbs • an action word or a linking word

  8. Linking Verbs • Present tense forms of the verb “to be” AM-IS-ARE-WAS-WERE-BE-BEING-BEEN!

  9. Adverbs • Add information to verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. • Answer the questions When? Where? How? To what extent? • Tend to end in –ly.quicklyexpertly confidently • Most common adverbs: too, very

  10. Which of these sentences is wrong? • You did good on your talk. • You did well on your talk. • The weather was bad over the weekend. • The weather was badly over the weekend.

  11. Prepositions • The point of your DREAM HOUSE assignment • Anywhere a cat can go!Around the sofaOn top of the vaseUnder the tableIn the den

  12. Conjunctions • Conjunctions combine ideas. • Think of the FANBOYS! • I like cherry water ice, but I also like pina colada.

  13. Conjunctions • Correlative conjunctions come in pairs. -either…or -neither…nor-not only… but also-whether…or -both…and

  14. Interjections • Expressions of intense emotion or surprise • Hey! Get your hands off my cell phone! • Say-can you help me carry these boxes? • Yikes, that big spider scares me!

  15. Sentence Types • Do you remember “The Case of the Missing Dentures”? • Four types of sentences:-Declarative -Imperative -Interrogative -Exclamatory

  16. Commas and Quotation Marks • Do commas go inside or outside of quotation marks? • Inside! • Example: “Throw out that gum,” stated Ms. Weand.

  17. Independent and Dependent Clauses • An independent clause can stand alone. • A subordinate/dependent clause cannot. Because Samantha was late, we missed the train to Boston. “Because Samantha was late” is subordinate. It can’t stand alone. “We missed the train to Boston” is independent.
