  3. CONTEXT • Recession • Public spending cuts and fewer job opportunities • Higher Education (HE) changes • Higher tuition fees - bigger student debt • Half of UK universities think it has become more difficult to convince young people of the benefits of HE

  4. CONTEXT • Government keen to encourage apprenticeships and internships • Increasing Level 3 and 4 apprenticeship opportunities • Apprenticeship vacancies not keeping pace with demand • Increased opportunities for higher skilled work, fewer opportunities for unskilled work

  5. CONTEXT • Employers and universities want people to have employability skills and relevant experience • Government wants to see Work Experience in Post 16 • Record levels of youth unemployment (16-24 year-olds)

  7. CHOICES AT 18 • Employment with training • Course at college or in the Post 16 Centre • Apprenticeship • Internship • Self-employment • Gap Year • University (UK or other)

IMPROVINGYOUR CHANCES(OF GETTING WHAT YOU WANT ) • Get good results • Develop (and provide evidence of) a wide range of relevant skills • Get relevant work experience • Do effective research into progression routes • Make use of the help available • Make a (detailed, realistic and coherent) plan • Have a PLAN B
