  1. Common Core High School Mathematics:Transforming Instructional Practice for a New Era School Year Session 5: November 6, 2013 Planning for Reasoning, Reasons for Planning 1.1

  2. Agenda • Seeing MP3 in a Classroom Task • Break • Planning for MP3 • District Planning Time • Homework and closing remarks 1.2

  3. Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Learning Intentions: We are learning to identify evidence of MP3, “Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others,” in teacher and student actions. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we identify teacher moves that support student engagement in MP3.

  4. Seeing MP3 in a Classroom Task Activity 1: • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Read MP3 • Highlight key verbs that would help describe student behaviors. 1.4

  5. Seeing MP3 in a Classroom Task Activity 1: • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Use string to indicate connections between the entries, including entries in different quadrants, on your charts from the last session. 1.5

  6. Seeing MP3 in a Classroom Task Activity 1: • Place the whole numbers from 1 through 6 round a triangle, with one number at each vertex and one number in the middle of each side, so that the sums of the 3 numbers along each side of the triangle are equal. 2 5 4 ? 6 3 1 1.6

  7. Break

  8. Planning for MP3 Activity 2: • Re-form into content-level groups. • Looking back on the Triangle Task, • What student behaviors (yours!) related to MP3 did you observe during the task? • What teacher moves did you observe? • What were the teacher’s expectations for the task? 1.8

  9. Planning for MP3 Activity 2: • Read the Thinking Through a Lesson Protocol (TTLP). • Which parts of this protocol would be particularly relevant to increasing student engagement in MP3? 1.9

  10. Planning for MP3 Activity 2: • Now consider the lesson you are planning for your project. • In content-level groups, discuss steps you might take to increase student engagement in MP3 in your lesson. You may wish to use the TTLP protocol to guide your discussion. • Record suggestions • on your chart. 1.10

  11. Learning Intentions & Success Criteria Learning Intentions: We are learning to identify evidence of MP3, “Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others,” in teacher and student actions. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we identify teacher moves that support student engagement in MP3.

  12. District Planning Time Activity 3: • Reorganize into your district teams. With them: • Continue your discussion from last time around your chosen focal Standards for Mathematical Practice. • As you discuss, consider what you might collect as evidence of student engagement in your focal SMPs. • After identifying what you will collect, discuss how you will plan for teachingin ways that support student engagement in your focal SMPs. 1.12

  13. Homework & Closing Remarks Activity 4: • Homework: • Finish planning the first draft of your lesson. You will have an opportunity to receive feedback from your peers on November 20, but you should be ready to teach the final version of the lesson between November 20 and December 4. • In light of today’s discussion, consider how you might plan to increase student engagement in MP3 during your lesson. • Read the article Thinking through a Lesson: Implementing High-Level Tasks, by Smith, Bill and Hughes. 1.13
