Hydrocephalus Water on the Brain
Hydro - Cephalus Hydrocephalus is a buildup of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling.
Causes Hydrocephalus is due to a problem with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The fluid brings nutrients to the brain, takes away waste from the brain, and acts as a cushion.
Major Symptoms The symptoms of hydrocephalus depend heavily on the cause of the blockage, the age of the person, and the extent of brain tissue damage. These symptoms include: • Downward-gazing eyes • Irritability • Seizures • Sleepiness • Vomiting • Eyes uncontrollable in movement, and sunken in
Diagnosing Hydrocephalus Upon child birth, there are initial cranial circumference measurements made. The growth of these measurements may indicate cephalic difficulties. Imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and magnetic resonance may also be used to diagnose hydrocephalus.
Seriousness 50-60% of the cases in hydrocephalus result in death. Survivors of this traumatic disease may have varying degrees of certain intellectual, physical, and neurological disabilities.
Correctable vs. Disabling Hydrocephalus can be disabling if it is unmanageable or untreated, but can be corrected through the surgical insertion of a Shunt System.
Treatment • Hydrocephalus is usually treated with the insertion of a Shunt System, which redirects the flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the central nervous system to another area of the body where it can be absorbed as a part of the normal circulatory system.
probability • It is estimated that every 1/500 children are carriers of the hydrocephalus. This is a statistic that is hard to predict or follow, because there is no database of the people who have it.
Information The National Institute of Neurological and Stroke and the National Institutes of Health provide lengthy and accurate information regarding all aspects of hydrocephalus.
