Landscape Architecture is the whole art of preparation, creating design, planning, construction, design and direction of back yard working with the resources available in nature. It unites engineering and architecture into one cohesive, more operational discipline which is related to just about every component of our own lives. The aims of research architecture are to use science and technology in an integrated way to design, construct, operate, manage, conserve, restore, or recycle the built environment and make it ecologically sustainable. It is designed to produce healthy and safe environments that are appropriate to humans and their habitats. Landscape design research include design research, such as building design theory and research. A building is considered 'effective' only if its design and construction to satisfy or exceed its ecological, energy efficiency, ecological, functional, economic, aesthetic, design, security, sustainability, and cost effectiveness. During this first part of the course students will have a foundation in the concepts of landscape architecture and some practical knowledge of how the different aspects of landscape architecture are developed by professionals in the field. In the second year students will study different concepts that are important in the profession. Courses such as mathematics, surveying, landscape psychology and the theory of knowledge transfer are taught in this time. Some of the theoretical and applied areas that will be covered in this time include ecological landscape planning, environmental policy and sustainability, water and land use management, social and cultural aspects of the design process, building codes, health and safety and architecture. Students are also given a chance to choose a particular area in which they would like to specialise in. At the end of their courses students will be given the opportunity to build their own portfolio so that they can present their own ideas to potential employers. In most cases, these portfolios will contain photographs taken during their course as well as references and examples of previous work completed by the student. Landscape architects often have portfolios in order to showcase their work, to help to promote themselves and build their portfolio.
University landscape architecture programs can also help students to gain further qualifications and experience. Students are able to take these courses at the same time as university studies. Courses will vary at different universities however; at some universities landscape architecture students may complete their degree as part of their general landscape architecture degree. For individuals who want to pursue a career in landscape architecture but cannot afford the cost of a formal university education, there are many organisations that offer landscape architecture courses for students on a part-time basis and on an on demand basis. Landscape architects can use the same techniques that they would use in university courses such as classroom lectures and discussion groups.
