How to Overcome Unemployment for Military Veterans in Australia?
Veterans are likely to possess certain skills from their service in the Defence Force, and this should improve their chance of getting hired after they discharge. However, most of them have difficulty in finding a job. In some cases, they get entry-level jobs or become underemployed and earn less than what they used to while in service. Unemployment for military veterans is not uncommon, with the rate currently at 30.2 percent, which is over five times the national average. That means only one in three veterans in Australia are employed. The reasons for that includes discrimination, poor health or trauma (PTSD), difficulty with job searches, skills mismatch, and selection. These make it more difficult for veterans to transition back into regular society.
