What does a single phase mean in a generator
Gensets usually come in two kinds – single phase and three phase generators. The more the power, the more amperes is needed to be carried by the wires, which would necessitate the increase in the dial of the wire. If you do not have any three phase motor that is to be run on the genset, you should go for the single phase generator only, even though the price of three phase generator is much lower than the single phase genset. If you are looking for residential purposes, then single phase generator should be your first priority because it is difficult to balance all the three phases and the imbalance can cause your alternator to burn. But for commercial and industrial purposes, you should opt for three phase generator. Also, you will rarely find a genset above 35 kVA which is NOT a three phase one. The generator price increases exponentially and no alternator manufacturer makes them and if they do, they only make them on order, so you can expect higher price and delayed delivery.
