Merengue Started from the Dominican Republic. There certainly are a number of stories describing how the dance originated. The most common one is that of the slaves that were chained together and had to proceed by dragging a foot at one time. Merengue as both beat music and as the footwork is very much like walking, it's a very easy dance to master.
