Chemical Properties • A chemical property of matter is difficult to explain, but easy to see. • Chemical property= a substances ability to produce a reaction and change into a new substance. • The most common are: general reactivity, flammability, and combustibility.
Physical Properties • Physical property= a property that can be observed or measured without changing the substance. • Some simple examples are: color, odor, shape, etc. • Some other physical properties include: conductivity(heat & electricity), state of matter, malleability(can be pounded into sheets), ductility(can form into wire), solubility(dissolves), and density.
Density • Density=The amount of mass an object has per unit of volume. D=m/v. • Density is recorded in units of g/mL. • Water has a density ~1g/mL. Anything that has a density less than 1g/mL will float. Anything with a density greater than 1g/mL will sink. • Mass=The amount of matter in a substance. • Volume=The amount of 3D space an object takes up.
There are two ways to get the volume of an object: calculate it or measure it. • The only shapes we will calculate the volume of are normal shaped boxes and cylinders. • Volume of a normal box= l x w x h • Volume of a cylinder= Πr2h • Watch the demonstration of how to measure volume and take notes.
