What’s in a name? • Jupiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System and so is named after the Roman king of the gods.
How big is it? Because Jupiter is so big, We can only show part of planet here.
Io • Io is Jupiter’s major moon. The colourful blotches on Io are caused by its many volcanoes, which are constantly erupting.
Callisto • Callisto is Jupter’s major moon. Callisto has lots of craters. It was blasted by meteorites over billions of years.
Europa • Europa is Jupiter’s major moon. Europa is covered in ice. There may be water, and even life, beneath. No one knows for sure.
Ganymede • Ganymede is Jupiter‘s major moon. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. It’s even bigger than the planet Mercury.
Mission Impassible • In 1995, the spacecraft Galileo dropped a smaller explorer spacecraft, or probe, into Jupiter. It parachuted down, collecting data from the clouds, before being crushed and melted by the atmosphere.
Comet Collision • In 1994, a comet called Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke apart and hit Jupiter. Scientists found out new information about the structure of the planet from this collision.
King of the gods • Jupiter, the biggest planet, is aptly named after the Roman god Jupiter, the king of the gods and the god of thunder and lightning. The planet’s symbol is a version of a thunderbolt.
Great red spot • A huge, violent hurricane blows non-stop on Jupiter. It is around 25,000 km (16,000 miles) across – about twice the size of Earth. Its winds reach speeds of 400 kph (250 mph).
