Personal Network Dynamics in Spanish Communities: A Study on Behavior Effects

This research assesses changes in personal network structure and composition in selected Spanish communities, examining effects on ethnic identification, social support, and citizen participation. It aims to propose a theoretical framework integrating classic social science dichotomies. Subgroups focus on trends of personal network change in immigrants, college students, and local organizations in Barcelona and Seville. The study includes two waves of data collection, qualitative interviews, and behavior correlates.

  1. Personal network dynamics and individual behaviour in selected communities in Spain José Luis Molina & Carlos Lozares Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Isidro Maya Jariego Universidad de Sevilla ECRP 2006-2009

  2. Objectives ... • To assess the changes in personal network structure and composition and their effects in behavior (i.e. ethnic identification, social support, citizen participation) … • … to develop a more general theoretical proposal from the social network perspective about the integration of classic dichotomies in Social Sciences, like macro-micro levels and behavior and cognition.

  3. Subgroups ... • Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and ethnic identity in immigrants (Barcelona) • Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and pattern of residence in college students (Seville) • Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and cognition in a network of local organizations (Barcelona).

  4. Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and ethnic identity in immigrants (Barcelona) • Select immigrants from different ethnics groups (at least 20 Dominicans, 20 Argentineans and 20 SeneGambians), type of personal network, sex, age, years of residence, education and perform a follow up of two more waves. • Keep the personal network size (45 alters) and most of variables from the "0" wave, especially ethnic identification, racism, pattern of alters’ location, remittances, smoking & health issues and perform again qualitative interviews based on the visualization of personal network.

  5. Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and pattern of residence in college students (Seville) • Selection of around 60 university students that are commuters between Sevilla and Alcalá (small town 15 kms far from Sevilla). Also, we will obtain a complete network of university students from Alcalá in a small university (Pablo de Olavide). • Perform two waves with information about: (a) personal networks of 45 alters and (b) sense of community with Sevilla and Alcalá.

  6. Subgroup . Trends of personal network change and cognition in a network of local organizations (Barcelona) • Selection of a small city involved currently in a local development initiative in order to study the changes. • Perform two waves to 20-40 managers of associations-institutions related with the initiative. In each wave will be studied: - The network of organizations involved or related with the project. - The manager’s personal network. - The cognitive network of each manager about the issue of citizen participation. This cognitive network will be elicited presenting a roster of 40 words related with the topic and asking informants to connect them in at least two ways (similarity and cause-effect).

  7. In all cases ... • A set of personal networks • Two waves • Behaviour correlates • Qualitative interviews …
