How You Inherit These Genes From Your Parents… • The characteristics that we have depends on the genes that we inherit from our parents. • People have two copies of each gene, one copy inherited from the mother and the other copy inherited from the father. • The two copies of the gene may be exactly the same or be slightly different versions, called alleles. • These genes are present in all people, but slightly different versions, or alleles, account for the variations seen in eye and hair colour.
Dominant vs. Recessive Alleles • In heterozygous individuals, the allele that is "expressed" (seen in individual’s appearance) is the "dominant" allele • The traits that are expressed make up your "phenotype" • The allele that is not expressed is the "recessive" allele. • These are shown in using these diagrams and the capital letter is the dominant allele and the recessive allele is the small letter.
How Polydactyly is inherited • Mutation in a variety of genes can cause polydactyly. • Typically the mutated gene is involved in developmental patterning and a condition of inherited anomalies results, of which polydactyly is one feature. • Or it can occur by itself and this is when it is not a trait with multiple factors. • The condition has an incidence of 1 in every 500 live births.
