    1. What is an IC Engine? IC Stands for Internal Combustion The fuel combustion is taking place inside the cylinder. An Engine is a machine which converts fuel energy into Mechanical Energy. Diesel Engine operates on liquid fuel. It depends on heat developed by compressing air to ignite fuel.

    2. Construction of IC Engine Stationary parts Frame work, Crank Case, Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head etc.. Moving Parts Piston, Connecting Rod, Crank Shaft, Cam Shaft, valve gear etc..

    3. Diesel Cycle All Diesel engines are 4 Stroke Engine. Suction Stroke Compression Stroke Power Stroke Exhaust stroke.

    4. Suction Stroke Exhaust valve closes. Inlet valve opens. Piston moves from TDC to BDC. Partial vacuum is created in the cylinder. The filtered air comes thro’ Inlet port.

    5. Compression Stroke Inlet valve closes Exhaust valve remains closed. The piston moves from BDC to TDC. Air is compressed. Temp raises to about 1000 degree F or 540 C.

    6. Power Stroke Both the valves closed. Fuel injected as fine spray thro’ injector. Fuel ignites due to temperature. Due to heavy expansion , the piston moves towards BDC . Energy is stored in Fly wheel.

    7. Exhaust Valve Exhaust valve opens Inlet valve remains closed Piston moves from BDC to TDC Exhaust gases are expelled out. Engine ready for next cycle.

    8. Engine Alternator Engine – Converting natural form of energy into mechanical energy. Alternator – or Generator ,an electro magnetic machine which converts mechanical energy into Electrical Energy.
