CHEM108 LabSection 2123 – Monday 2-5pmSPRING 2013 Please turn your cell phones off Professor Johnson jjohnson@dvc.edu Office hours: M/W 8:30-10:30 (PS239)
CHEM108 – Introductory Chemistry (Professor Johnson – jjohnson@dvc.edu) • IF NOT REGISTERED and want to join us, you must: • Email me to let me know you wish to join • Attend lecture until Jan. 23rd and lab (this week), and you must “late” add by Jan. 25th, if slots become available • Check with other CHEM108 sections for available slots • (unregistered only) For WebCT access: • ID: stjenniferjPASSWORD: chem108sp13 2
Required for every lab session: • Lab Manual: DVC Chemistry 108 Experiments • Bounded Lab notebook • composition notebook or spiral notebook • Safety goggles or glasses • Scientific calculator • Appropriate attire
My assumptions of CHEM108 researchers: • You have prepared for lab; i.e., you’ve read the day’s experiment and completed prelab assignment • Safety is your #1 concern • You have read and understood the Lab Syllabus
My expectations of CHEM108 researchers: • Be on time and ready to participate • Be able to work independently and with partners • Clean-up lab after experimentation (workbench, balance room, fume hood area, equipment) • Check out with me before leaving lab for the day
Attendance: • Lab attendance is mandatory • If you must miss lab due to illness, family emergency, or other documented excuse, you must email me BEFORE LAB BEGINS • BE ON TIME . . . Lab begins promptly at 2:00pm • Your tardiness may be considered “unexcused” and the missed lab cannot be made up • “Pop” quizzes are from 2:00 – 2:10pm
Prelabs assignments: • Online and due 30 minutes prior to lab (i.e., 1:30pm) • Late prelabs are not accepted Lab Reports (including Discussion questions): • Due at beginning of lab (2:00pm sharp) • Late lab reports = 10% off for each day late • Discussion questions are on WebCT in “Lab” folder and should be included with Lab Report, when assigned
Lab Notebooks and Lab Reports: • Lab Syllabus describes what to include in them, both before and during experimentation • Yes, I will be checking them periodically • They are legal documents • It is NEVER okay to falsify data by changing it, including arbitrarily adding zeroes to measurements e.g.) if you measure 4.0 cm, don’t report “4.00 cm” • This is falsifying data and you will receive a zero score on your lab report • If make error, cross out with single line (and initial)
CHEM108 Lab – Important Locations • Fume hoods • “common” drawers • Beneath open shelf near locker • Trash (broken glass versus regular) • Balance room
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Always wear appropriate clothing and shoes to lab • No open-toed shoes, no shorts above knees, no skirts, no kilts, no tank tops, no dangling necklaces or hand jewelry • You can wear a labcoat if you want • if not dressed properly, you’ll be sent home
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • NEVERreturn unused chemicals to original container • Dispose of any overages appropriately • Only use providedspatula/scoopula to scoop out solid reagents, otherwise use “tip and tap” method • Only use provided pipets to dispense liquid reagents • NEVER set stopper down on lab bench • hold it with back of hand while pouring
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • NEVER pour chemicals down drain
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Report accidents, injuries, inappropriate behavior, or spills to me immediately, including if you accidentally touch chemicals • Wash hands before going home
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • To light Bunsen burner: • Safety check • goggles, hair, tubing • Close air ports • Strike match • Open gas valve • Light top of burner FROM SIDE and adjust air ports
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • NEVER, EVER leave a lighted burner unattended
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • If an earthquake, turn off burners and equipment, then get to our meeting place • Meeting place is parking lot in front of Physical Sciences Division office • Check in with me when you get there lab
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • It is NEVER okay to pipet by mouth • Use a pipet bulb • Avoid inhaling any vapors • Smell chemicals by “wafting”
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Inspect glassware for cracks or damage before use, especially “star” cracks • If you break glass equipment, let me know • Sweep up broken glass and dispose in Broken-Glass Container ONLY
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • ALWAYS wear goggles when drawers are open or someone else is working . . . . . . there is NO exception to this rule! . . . Want to see why?
The alternative to goggles could be this: • This is also why NO CONTACT LENSES are allowed to be worn in lab
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Never work in the lab without me or another professor being present
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Always READ LABELS carefully before dispensing anything • If you take it, put it back after you’re done using it
CHEM108 Lab Safety Rules • Always pour acid slowly into water to dilute – NEVERpour water into acid! (Remember: A in W is good rootbeer!)
Emergency Situations in CHEM108 Lab Think … … don’t panic!
Emergency Situations in CHEM108 Lab • If your clothing catches fire, calmly get to the safety shower • If your lab partner’s clothing catches fire, use the fire blanket to smother the fireor safety shower • Locate the safety shower • How do we use it? • Locate the fire blanket
Emergency Situations in CHEM108 Lab • Corrosive: destructive to solid matter • Corrosive chemicals splashed on skin should be flushed off promptly with flowing water for at least 15 minutes • If splashed on clothing, clothing must be removed immediately while getting to safety shower • Stay under the running shower for at least 15 minutesand tell someone to call 911
Emergency Situations in CHEM108 Lab • Corrosive chemicals splashed in an eye should be flushed in an eyewash fountain immediately • Wash the eye for at least 15 minutes while holding the eyelid open with hands • Move eyeballs up, down, left, right, criss-cross, round and round • Locate the eyewash fountain
Thanks for attending CHEM108 safety training REGISTERED STUDENTS ONLY may remain (lab check-in)
CHEM108Lab Check-In Professor Johnson jjohnson@dvc.edu Office hours: M/W 8:30-10:30 (PS239) Only REGISTERED STUDENTS may check into a locker
Paperwork: • Responsibility for Safety forms • Be sure to sign it • Yellow copy is yours • Pink check-in list • White Locker Cards (I will bring you) • After checking into lockers, you must check out by 05/13 (last lab session) regardless if you complete CHEM108 or drop it
Check-In Information and Advice: • Pictures of equipment on pg V in Lab Manual • Found item not on pink list? Ask me where to put it • Check carefully for missing items, cracks in and cleanliness of equipment • if broken, go to Stockroom for replacement. . . otherwise, you’ll pay for it after today • if dirty, clean it today or replace it at Stockroom • To Stockroom, walk out door, turn right, look on right-hand side of walkway for double doors
Please: exchange any disposable test tubes (no white label visible): with pyrex/borosilicate test tubes at the Stockroom window (white label visible):
PLEASE PUT ON SAFETY GOGGLES OR SAFETY GLASSES NOW • Continue to wear them while you and others are checking into lockers
