E N D
Today’s theme: Dommerich Elementary is “just right” for me! Welcome to Dommerich!
Before the Year Begins… Before your child has their first day of school, we hope to see them at the events: • Kindergarten Screening • Home Visit • Meet the Teacher
Kindergarten Screenings Before your child arrives to kindergarten, we want to make sure that they have a smooth transition to Dommerich. To help us get to know your child better, we offer a Kindergarten Screening over the summer. Not only do we get to work one on one with your child, but we can also use the data collected to help us plan our lessons and activities for the first few weeks of school.
Home Visits Another opportunity we offer for incoming kindergartners. Once classes are created, the Kindergarten teachers will reach out to families to schedule a Home Visit. A Home Visit allows the teacher and the child to meet in a place that is comfortable to the child. We also get a chance to answer questions that the child or families may have about kindergarten.
Meet the Teacher Finally, it’s time to visit the classroom! Students and parents get a chance to come see their classrooms and their teachers. There will be a scavenger hunt for the students to help them find important places or things in the classroom. Parents will have the opportunity to drop off and sort school supplies to help the teachers get prepared for the First Day of School.
As students enter, they are excited for each new day of Kindergarten!Teachers and staff are too! Our school is a safe, happy place to learn and grow! Officially a Chief!
Morning Routines • Unpacking Routines: Develops personal responsibilities. • Morning Work: Helps get our brains activated for learning. • Morning Announcements: Lets us know what is going on at school each day. • Arriving with a full stomach and a good night’s rest keeps our bodies fueled and energized for learning.
Morning Meeting Building a loving community in our classrooms everyday! We greet each other, share news, sing, do group activity, and read our morning message to help us make connections and learn.
A Typical Day While no 2 days are alike, we do like to make sure we have routines and procedures in place to help our classes run smoothly. Our mornings are filled with community building and literacy opportunities. Midday, we are having recess and lunch. In the afternoons, we explore math, science, and social studies ideas. We also go to specials and build social skills through Learning Stations.
Literacy Block • Whole Group Learning • Read Alouds, Comprehension Skills, Phonics Lessons, Shared Reading, Writing, Handwriting • Small Group Learning—differentiated instruction • Independent Learning • Daily 5 • Read to Self, Read with Someone, Word Work, Listening, Working on Writing, and Computers • Student choice=Student engagement
Daily 5 is an approach to literacy stations that has 5 core activities to help students be more independent as readers and writers. Students also have a choice each day from the 5 options. While the majority of the class works independently, the teacher is able to provide small group instruction to other students. Daily 5
Guided Reading Groups Teacher works with students in small groups to provide reading instruction and foundational skills that are just right for the students in that group.
Lunch in the cafeteria! Bring a lunch or Buy a lunch! You can create an online account to manage payments for the days your child wants to buy a lunch! Also, you can enjoy the opportunity to eat lunch with your child on our patio area!
Recess Classes are scheduled for 20 minutes of recess or unstructured play each day, usually before or after lunch. For safety, we limit the playground to no more than 3 classes at a time.
Math Students receive daily math instruction and also independent choices to provide a “hands on” approach to exploring concepts and skills! Calendar routines help us practice patterning, counting, and number recognition in an authentic way.
Writer’s Workshop Students are given opportunities to practice writing using pictures and words as they learn traits of writing, such as directionality, spacing, approximate spelling, and punctuation. Students write about their opinions, responses to books, and about their own lives.

Learning Centers Time for building social skills and friendships!
Field Trips and Special Days In Kindergarten, we go on 2 main field trips. We typically choose to have one trip that is Science related—such as Green Meadows Farm or Sea World, and one that is Literature-based—plays or musicals that are based on works by some of our favorite Early Childhood Authors. We also have special days throughout the year to celebrate holidays and milestones of kindergarten—Fire Safety, Costume Parade, Traditions Around the World, 100th Day of School, and Earth Day Rotations, just to name a few.
