  2. General facts • Capital - Des Moines; • area - 92 000 km2; • population - around 3 million; • location - midwestern part of the United States • neighbours - Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri; • Iowa - Ioway people.

  3. Geography • Major rivers - Mississippi River, Missouri River; • rolling hills; • about 5 percent is forested; • bald eagle; • animals - deers, raccoons, opossums, chipmunks.

  4. Symbols • Bird - Eastern Goldfinch; • flower - Wild Rose; • grass - Bluebunch Wheatgrass; • tree - Oak; • rock - Geode; • motto - "Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain."

  5. History • Native Americans; • the French Period - Louis Jolliet and Marquette; • Louisiana Purchase - became a part of the USA; • december 1846 - Iowa became a state; • Civil War -  helped with railroad; • diverse religious history - small sects; • Amish, Amana Inspirationists and Mormons.

  6. Economy • Diverse economy; • inflation in 1970's; • agriculture - livestock, crops; • taxation; • transportation - airports and railroads.

  7. Culture • Outdoor sports - fishing, hunting, camping; • many festivals - tulip, food; • attractions - adventureland, zoo, waterpark; • Iowa State Fair.
