4. The Unit • Established in 2001 • Based in Estates Services • Located in 1-9 Old Park Hill • Team of 6 full time and 3 part time members of staff

Environmental Policy • To coordinate all the areas, we developed a policy agreed by UPARC, with supporting implementation and action plans • Policy targets • To reduce carbon dioxide emissions per square metre by at least 20% below 2000/2001 levels by the 2010. • To reduce water consumption per square metre by at least 20% below 2000/2001 levels by 2010. • To reduce waste per FTE (staff & student) going to landfill by 60% below 1997/98 levels by 2010.

Legislative Compliance • EEMU works to ensure the University is compliant with relevant environmental legislation. • Over 40 pieces of environmental legislation relating to the University • New environmental legislation regularly coming into force e.g. WEEE Directive • ‘Everyone’ has a role to ensure we are compliant e.g. Duty of Care

Environmental Management System • An EMS is a formal system for managing an organisation's impact on the environment • Incorporates the organisational structure, practices, procedures, processes and resources for environmental management • HEFCE Funded pilot project - EcoCampus • EMS will be implemented first in Estates Services

11. Waste Management • Reduce and reuse initiatives • 13 recycling programmes including: • During 2005/2006, the University recycled 53% of its waste (approximately 633 tonnes).

12. Transport • Staff travel plan • Car park management • Cycle facilities • Public transport • Car share scheme • Student travel • University Travel Plan Coordinator

13. Environmental Purchasing ‘taking environmental and social factors into account in purchasing decisions with the aim of minimising the environmental and social impacts of the purchases you make.’

14. Environmental Purchasing • Simple steps • Made from recycled material & recyclable • Energy efficient • Do not include excess packaging • Sourced from local suppliers • Developing a sustainable procurement policy with the Purchasing Office. • Part of a national project on procurement.

19. How are we doing in achieving the targets? • Carbon Dioxide reduced by 18% • Water reduced by 23% • Waste to landfill reduced by 51% We actually produce almost 41,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. That volume would fill 8,000 hot air balloons

What can you do? • Turn off lights and equipment (printers, computers, monitors) when not required • Report energy and water wastage to the EEMU • Use the University recycling schemes for paper, cardboard, cans, etc • Not sure how to dispose of something – contact us! • Sign up to the Green Office Charter

21. Green Office Charter • As a department you may want to consider what you can do to help? • Signing up to the Green Office Charter, could be the starting point. • Voluntary scheme - the charter suggests some things you can do, but we encourage departments to adapt this for your systems and processes. • Have a pack of posters etc for you to get started.
