& Q’s P’s A Call to Holy Living
Schizophrenic God Galatians 3:1-29 Hebrews 8:1-13
Galatians 3:1-6 • 1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?
Law Binds You • Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? -Galatians 3:3 • The Law did not make us free. The Law did not transform our hearts. • The Law is external, showing us God’s holiness in contrast with our lack of holiness. • The Law is my accuser, not my Savior.
Promise Frees You • 19Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. -Galatians 3:19 • The Law is in place for sins. It points out all your faults, not the cure for your wickedness. • The Promise outlines God’s plan for redemption, His action on your behalf.
Law Reminds You • 23Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. -Galatians 3:23–24 • The Law is like a guardian, showing you right and wrong, but unable to change you. • The Law imprisons you for your sins and crimes. It puts you on trial and makes you pay the penalty.
Promise Brings Relationship • 10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. -Hebrews 8:10 • Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we can once again be holy and have a relationship with God. • The Holy Spirit teaches us holiness from the inside out. Our thoughts, intentions, motives and desires become holy, and our actions follow.
My Life • What is the Holy Spirit desiring to change in me right now? • What does God’s Word teach about this area of my life? • What conviction is God placing before me? • Will I walk in the freedom of obedience to God’s Holy Spirit, or will I search for laws that bind me to my sins?
