Higher/Int 2 PE Preparation of the body – Football (Copy all slides)
An example of why CRE is needed in football. In football my playing role is right midfield and this role places specific demands on me. Firstly, Cardio Respiratory Endurance (aerobic Endurance) refers to the ability of the performer to sustain a long period of exercise without fatigue affecting performance. In this case I am required to last the duration of matches, usually 90minutes, against well-matched opponents. Having effective Cardio Respiratory Endurance means that your heart and lungs must work effectively so as to pump oxygenated blood to the major muscle groups in the body.
As a midfield player I have attacking and defensive responsibilities which require me to cover a large area of the football pitch. In attack I need to be able to move on and off the ball quickly both when using space and when creating space. I have to be able to do this by changing tempo for long periods within each forty five minute half without tiredness setting in. I cannot allow my aerobic endurance performance to suffer as this may result in possession being lost and could also mean the difference between winning and losing a match. When playing my defensive role in midfield this requires me to pick up my opponent quickly, deny them space and time on the ball and force them to make an error, which we as a team can exploit. When playing man to man defence I must track my opponent and stay close to them. This requires a high work rate, which often occurs for long periods of time.
AEROBIC TRAINING Aims: 1.To increase the capacity to the oxygen transporting system. 2. To increase the capacity of muscles to utilise oxygen during prolonged periods of exercise. 3. To increase the ability to recover rapidly after a prolonged period of high intensity exercise. Effects: 1. The blood volume increases and the heart becomes larger and stronger so it can pump more blood per unit of time. More oxygen can them be transported, thus increasing the aerobic energy production during high intensity exercise.
The benefits for football are: 1.A larger percentage of energy required for exercise can be supplied aerobically, which means that a player can work at a higher exercise intensity for prolonged periods of time during a match. 2. An improved endurance which allows a player to exercise at a higher intensity throughout the game. 3. Less time is required to recover after a period of high intensity exercise before being able to perform maximally in a subsequent match activity. Aerobic training can also help to minimise deterioration of technical performance and lapses in concentration induced by fatigue, which may occur towards the end of a game.
Homework (a) Name an activity. Describe the importance that one aspect of fitness has for the position you play within your activity. (8) (b) How will you aim to improve your current level of fitness for the aspect selected in (a)? What benefits will this give to your performance in the selected activity? (8)
