Iowa’s Perinatal Depression Project Goals • Increase screening, early identification, and referral • Train providers to conduct screening and appropriate treatment interventions • Improve support for women (and families) with depression
Change strategies • Health Professional education and Training • Recommendations and Policy Development • Public Awareness Campaign • Consumer involvement
Education and Training • Partner with Iowa Depression and Clinical Research Center • Train the Trainer • equips participants with knowledge and skills necessary to serve as instructors to teach maternal depression screening and referral • developed by Michael O’Hara PhD and Lisa Segre PhD • STEP support and training to • enhance primary Care for Postpartum Depression – Web base physician/advance practice combined with in person training for office nurse – • developed by Michael O’ Hara PhD and Scott Stuart MD – includes pocket guide for clinical practice.
Education and Training • Focus Groups • Local Title V staff to evaluate gaps in screening and referral practices • Best practice guide • for Title V Agencies • developed to improve practice in Iowa Dr. Robin Kopelman MD
Education and Training • Mental Health Consultant Service • Web based • staffed by University of Iowa Mental Health professionals • modeled after Illinois • Listening Visits -Training materials and implementation guide • Collaboration with IDCRC staff and Healthy Start case workers.
Improve Support for Women & Families • Post partum support groups, development of training materials and support development • Survey of all Iowa birthing hospitals showed only 2 had support groups however 25% were interested in developing one.
Policy Development Recommendations • Legislative issue briefs develop for Maternal Depression and Infant Mental Health • Off to a Good Start Consortium sponsored statewide conference IDCRC developed a Best Practice Guide for Health Care Professionals • Preservice curricula assessment and recommendations • Maternal and Infant Mental Health Summit in development for 2008 • Partnership with Iowa’s 1st FIVE Health Mental Development Initiative • Minority Focus Groups to remove barriers and improve our screening and treatment
Public Awareness Campaign • Media campaign on stigma and depression • Healthy Families Line • Statewide directory of mental health professionals by county • Consumer Web site – www.beyondtheblues.info • Magazine Advertisements: • Iowa Parents BABY • Des Moines Moms • Exhibits • Professional Conferences • Consumer targeted events • State Fair • Hospital Baby Fairs
