  2. DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE? • 1Jo 2:28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. • 1Jo 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE? • 1Jo 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. • 1Jo 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

  4. DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE? • 1Jo 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

  5. John says, “We Know”! • Confidence…Boldness…Victory… Assurance • There will be those who try to deceive you, 1 Jno. 2:24-26

EVIDENCE FOR OUR FAITH IS SURE, 1 Jno. 1:1-4 • Eyewitness testimony, 1 Jno. 4:14 • Inspired,2 Pet. 1:16-21 (Jno. 14:26) • Faith is not blind; it is bold & confident • So that our joy may be full, 1 Jno. 1:4 (Rom. 15:13) • NT basis of faith, fellowship & fullness in Christ, 1 Jno. 5:20 (Jno. 15:11)

  7. WE KNOW… (1 John) • We know Christ & are in Christ, 2:3-6 • If we keep commands, 3:24; 4:13 • This is love, Jno. 14:15; 1 Jno. 5:3 • Shows that we know God, 4:7-8 (11) • With faith & love…God abides in him & he in God, 4:15-16 • Abide in Christ by practicing righteousness, 2:28-29 (Jno. 15:4-7)

  8. WE KNOW… (1 John) • It is the last hour, 2:18-19 • Moment of crisis (many antichrists) • Deny Jesus is the Christ, 2:22-23 • False doctrine is against the Father and the Son • We must identify & avoid, 4:1-6

  9. WE KNOW… (1 John) • All things, 2:20-21, 24-27 • Truth consecrates & establishes us, Jno. 8:32; 17:17; Col. 3:16 • NT is true…let truth abide in you, cf. 2 Jno. 2

  10. WE KNOW… (1 John) • We will be like Him when He returns, 3:1-3; Phil. 3:20-21 • Assures our hope in Him • Gives purpose to holy living • Boldness in day of judgment, 4:17

  11. WE KNOW… (1 John) • Jesus came to take away our sins, 3:4-9 • Eternal life (1:2); Propitiation (2:2) • Destroy works of devil (3:8); Savior (4:14) • Committed no sin, 3:5 • Christian is not to practice sin, 3:6-9 (Rom. 6:1-2); 5:18 • Habit of righteousness, 2:29

  12. WE KNOW… (1 John) • We have passed from death to life, 3:13-15 • In contrast to the world (where hatred reigns) • Brotherly love assures us that we abide in eternal life

  13. WE KNOW… (1 John) • Love, 3:16-18 • Practicing brotherly love affirms that we abide in God & He in us, 4:12-13 (Jno. 13:35) • Love is not a life of doubt

  14. WE KNOW… (1 John) • We are of the truth, 3:19-21 • Life of love assures & settles our heart • Confidence toward God, 4:17-19

  15. WE KNOW… (1 John) • Truth and error, 4:1-6 • Know the Spirit of God (He is the source of truth), 4:1-2 • Know the spirit (disposition, influence, nature) of truth & error, 4:6 • We do not doubt truth; we are established in it, 2 Pet. 1:12

  16. WE KNOW… (1 John) • We love the children of God, 5:1-3 • When we love God & keep His commandments • Obedience is born of faith (joy, hope) • Obedience is not a burden • Why do you obey: Love or compulsion?

  17. WE KNOW… (1 John) • God hears & answers prayer, 5:14-15 (3:22-23) • Our confidence is that God has regard for those who are faithful to Him • Pray always (Lk. 18:1)

  18. Summary, 5:18-20 1. We know those born of God do not (practice) sin, 5:18 • Christian carefully guards his new spiritual existence in Christ • Protection from Satan

  19. Summary, 5:18-20 2. We know we are of God, 5:19 • Demarcation, distinction & separation from the world, 2:15-17

  20. Summary, 5:18-20 3. We know the Son of God has come and given us an understanding, 5:20 • Assures our fellowship with the true God, 1:5-7

  21. WE KNOW • God has given us eternal life in the Son, 1 Jno. 5:11-12 • Written so believers know they have eternal life in Christ, 1 Jno. 5:13 • Don’t live in doubt – Continue living by faith (5:13; 2 Cor. 5:7)
