  2. Introduction In this chapter we will be covering how to write effective e-mails and how to Use commas correctly, make subjects and verbs agree, make pronouns and antecedents agree, check use of apostrophe, and check for other common errors.

  3. Goals • Use commas correctly. • Make subjects and verbs agree. • Make pronouns and antecedents agree. • Check use of apostrophe. • Check for other common errors.

  4. How to use commas correctly • Set off introductory word groups. • Join two sentences with a coordinating conjunction. • Set off all nonessential or explanatory elements. • Set apart two or more adjectives that equally modify the same noun. • http://www.savethecomma.com/game/

  5. Make subjects and verbs agree • Check any sentence that has a compound subject or a collective noun as the subject. • When you have a compound subject were one subject is singular and one is plural, your verb will depend on the coordinating conjunction between those subjects. • If the conjunction is “and,” the verb must be plural. • If the conjunction is “or” or “nor,” the verb must agree with the subject nearest to it.

  6. Make pronouns and antecedents agree • Pronouns and their antecedents must agree in number. They must both be singular or both be plural. • Pronouns and their antecedents must also agree in gender. • Place a pronoun as close to its antecedent. This makes a sentence clear. • Repeat a word instead of using a pronoun in sentences with two possible antecedents.

  7. Check use of apostrophe • Remember that apostrophes are used most often to show who owns something or to show possession and to form contractions. They are also used to form plurals. • The possessive of a singular noun is usually made by adding an apostrophe and “s”. • To form contractions an apostrophe is used to replace dropped letters in contractions. • To for plurals in special cases an apostrophe and “s” are used to form the plural of a letter, a number, or a sign.

  8. Check for other common errors • Some writers have a habit of turning verbs into nouns. Whenever possible, use strong verbs- not a noun made from the verb- to get your point across clearly and concisely. • You will want to avoid the misuse of “hopefully.” Don’t start a sentence with “hopefully.” Instead, use phrases such as “I hope that” or “we are hopeful.”

  9. Summary • Now you will know how to write effective e-mails and how to Use commas correctly, make subjects and verbs agree, make pronouns and antecedents agree, check use of apostrophe, and check for other common errors.
