Laos. Lao People’s Democratic Republic. General Information. Pathet Lao, a communist, seized governmental control in 1975. This ended a 600 year old monarchy. Initially, Laos had established closer ties to Vietnam. Over time, this was changed as Laos returned to Free Enterprise.

  2. General Information • Pathet Lao, a communist, seized governmental control in 1975. • This ended a 600 year old monarchy. • Initially, Laos had established closer ties to Vietnam. • Over time, this was changed as Laos returned to Free Enterprise.

  3. Laos liberalized their foreign investment laws. • In 1997, Laos was admitted into ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations.)

  4. Location • Absolute: 18º North Latitude and 105° East Longitude. • Relative: Southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam.

  5. Place • A little bigger than the state of Utah. • Laos is a landlocked country. • Climate: Tropical monsoon. Rainy season from May to November. Dry season from December to April.

  6. Terrain is mostly rugged mountains. There are plains and plateau’s as well. • Natural hazards: Floods and droughts.

  9. Languages: Lao is the official language. French, English, and other various ethnic languages are spoken as well. • The ethnicity is known as Laotian. • Laos is a communist state. • Gained independence from France on July 19, 1949. • Low Point is the Mekong River. • High Point is Phou Bia.

  10. Human and Environmental Interaction • Unexploded ordnance is a problem. • Deforestation • Soil Erosion • Shortage of potable water.

  11. Movement • Railways • Highways • Waterways • Pipelines for petroleum products. • No Ports or Harbors. • Airports: 51 total, 9 are paved, and 42 are unpaved.

  12. Illicit Drugs • The world’s 3rd largest producer of opium. • Potential heroin producer as well. • Transshipment point for heroin and methamphetamines produced in Myanmar. • Cannabis is illegally grown here too. • Growing problem with Methamphetamine.

  13. Region • Demarcation of boundaries with Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam is almost finished. • There are still several disputes with Thailand. • Problems with squatters in Thailand and Vietnam.
