  25. Advanced Network Applications Collaboration Recording Studio that Spans a Continent McGill University

  26. Shared virtual reality University of Illinois at ChicagoVirtual Temporal Bone Tele-immersion Images courtesy Univ. of Illinois-Chicago

  27. Virtual Aneurysm • A simulation and virtual reality visualization of brain blood flow • Researchers examine critical flow pattern and evaluate simulated surgical interventions University of California at Los Angeles http://www.cs.ucla.edu/~dalee/radsci/

  28. Human Embryo Development • 3-D visualizations of human embryo development • Doctors can manipulate data remotely • Animations of embryo system development for students George Mason University, Oregon Health & Science University, National Library of Medicine http://www.nac.gmu.edu/visembryo.htm http://www.ohsu.edu/chrc/

  29. Renal Physiology Modules • Overcomes the limits of one-dimensional mediums to represent dynamic systems of the body. • The modules allow students to integrate and apply their knowledge to real-life problems Stanford University Virtual Labs Project http://summit.stanford.edu/hhmi

  30. Anatomy and Surgery Workbench and Local NGI Testbed Network • Allows students to learn anatomy and practice surgery techniques using 3-D workstations • Network testbed evaluates the effectiveness of workbench applications Stanford University School of Medicine http://haiti.stanford.edu/~ngi/final/

  31. Advanced Network Applications NSF Access Grid Alliance

  32. Realistic, Life-Sized, 3D Tele-Immersion • Brings together geographically distant participants and shared virtual objects • Tele-immersive recreation of office environment Advanced Network & Services, Brown University, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania http://www.cs.unc.edu/Research/stc/office/

  33. White House Decision Center In a physical facility modeled after the West Wing of the White House, student groups assemble and meet in eight identical meetings rooms to work through a role-playing module based on Truman-era historical events.

  34. White House Decision Center • This curriculum includes four pre-visit and one post-visit classroom modules, extensive materials and teacher training. Teachers select one of the following scenarios for the class: • How to react to the North Korean invasion of South Korea in June 1950 • How to respond to the 1948 Soviet Blockade of Berlin • How to address post-WWII civil rights and desegregation of the military

  35. White House Decision Center The day culminates in a press conference where the decision reached by the student president is announced. Students now play the media and question the president’s decision.

  36. White House Decision Center: A Virtual Experience • H.323 • Synchronous chat • Virtual reality • Asynchronous group activities • Online digital content

  37. Possible Education Applications over Internet2….. • Language students talk to counterparts in a foreign country • Music students coached by master teachers from a distant site • Virtual field trips to museums • Advanced Placement courses offered by college faculty

  38. Possible Education Applications over Internet 2… • Students operating microscopes, telescopes, submersibles from their classrooms • Interactive discussions with astronauts on the International Space Station • Access to extensive archives of environmental, social & other science data

  39. Possible Education Applications over Internet2… • Collaboration with student partners located across the nation • Revisit the Lewis and Clark Expedition • Visit the Harry S. Truman Library – virtually • And many, many more ideas…. It’s up to you!

  40. Thank You! Special “thank you’s” to: • Barbara Danos • Joel Tohline • Diane Didier • Scott Menter • And the entire LSU “team”
