  2. Have you noticed oil patches on the floor or driveway? This is the first sign of an oil leak, what do you do now? How serious is it and can I carry on driving? Do I need to scrap my car? Most oil leaks are very minor and easy and affordable to fix But on the odd occasion it can be a red flag and the alarm bells should be ringing.

THINGS TO DO: • The first thing you should check is the oil dip-stick, if the level is empty or very low it is highly likely your oil leak is a serious matter that needs addressing straight away. • If the level seems acceptable you should visually inspect then engine, most engines are covered in dirt, grease and oil so you may want to clean the engine first so it is easy to spot a leak, if you can not see a leak you could cover the engine in a powder and leave it and come back to it in a few hours to see if the talc has caught any oil.

If you have multiple leaks this is a sure sign that a gasket has corroded and is not functioning as it should-which is a cheap fix. • You can always smell if oil being burnt whilst driving, once you pull over have a sniff around the exhaust, you will know just by the smell if the exhaust is ejecting burnt oil, also if cars are burning oil they will be chucking out blue smoke so keep an eye on the smoke coming out of the exhaust.

It would be a good idea to check your oil once a week and then you are sure to see a change on the dipstick if your car is using more oil than usual or there is a significant loss of oil.  Prevention is always better than a cure.
