Social Studies • Grade 3 • Unit Community helpers
Objectives • The students will be able to identify helpers in our community. They will also learn what the community helpers do in the community. • They will use technology to develop a better understanding of what the community helpers do for the community.

Materials • Pencil • Paper • Computer • Crayons or colored pencils • Books about community helpers and workers
Activity #1 • The students will go onto the website www.bls.gov/k12/ . • When they get to this website they will click on what they like to do, whether it is math, reading, sports or music. • When they click on the specific topic it will give them options of what type of job they will like to do. • When they decide what job they want to do then they will write a paper to describe their new exciting job that they wish to do some day.
Activity #2 • The students will use the information that they have found on their job to make a book • We will take each of the students reports and put them into a book, full of information for the students to look at any time in the classroom. • They will draw a picture to go along with their job description.
Activity #3 • We will have a guest speaker come into the classroom. • They will discuss what their job is in the community. • The students will listen to the presentation and when it is finished they will ask questions. • After the presentation is over the students will have the opportunity to write a friendly letter to the speaker. They will explain their likes dislikes and whatever else they feel is important to write down.

Activity #4 • The students will print off a picture of their favorite community helper. • They will write down what they know about their community helper and then write what they already know about their community helper.
Activity #5 • The students will hold a classroom election. • During this election they will discuss what they know about the parts of the local city government. • The students will write speeches to convince their fellow students that they are the right person for the job.
Activity #5 cont… • The student’s will be voting for many different types of community jobs. • Everyone will get a job in the community. • Their speeches will help them to get the jobs that they want the most.
Activity #6 • The students will visit a post office • At the post office the students will learn what goes on in the postal service. • They will take the letters they wrote to the guest speaker and learn what happens to get the letters mailed out to the correct location.
