Mission Statement To promote an understanding of disease and treatment in a foreign setting, including its local and global epidemiological consequences; To afford students the opportunity to learn first-hand about health and medical issues in resource-poor areas; To give students a greater appreciation and a deeper understanding and awareness of global health issues in order to promote a greater empathy for the health needs of people around the world.

    3. Educational Offerings I International electives are available to interested WCMC students during the summer between the 1st and 2nd year and during the 4th year. (4th year students receive elective credit). Some students take a year off between their 3rd and 4th year to take an international elective.

    6. Lessons Learned The importance of building a global health framework in the medical school curriculum; The importance of educating medical students about global health disparities as well as cultural sensitivity; The need to foster professional and social commitment on a global scale among medical students.

    7. Future Endeavors Expand our partnerships with quality organizations, especially in Latin America. Expand the opportunity for foreign medical students to take clinical electives at WCMC. Build the endowment program to permit all students who qualify to receive funding.

    8. Consider the funding of faculty exchange programs. Explore the establishment of a global health lectureship series for WCMC faculty and for visiting foreign faculty.

    9. Collaboration The Office of Global Health Education of the Weill Cornell Medical College is open to participating in a New York City global health consortium with the other medical schools in the area. We are not in a position to open up our international electives program to non-WCMC medical students, unfortunately.
