Jay Halt By the numbers
Basics • Age 46 • Married with 3 teenage kids (one in college) • Weight 236 pounds…and dropping • Patent attorney • Avid traveler • Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, tennis, but not going to the gym
Problem • Life is good, but….. • Yo-yo dieter • At 253 pounds, I was more than 40-50 pounds over what weight I would consider to be ideal • 50 is looming…time to modify my lifestyle for the long haul
Easy Solution, right? Must be less than Calories in Calories out
Perception is not reality • The chicken and broccoli pasta at is relatively healthy right? • Chicken & Broccoli Pasta 1476 calories 92 g of fat 93 g of carbs 7 g of fiber 69 g of protein 2810 of sodium
Need to get informed…need to track • 3 programs that I have used • Lose It! • Map My Fitness • Fit Bit
Lose It! • Track calories • Track exercises • Monitor goals • Compete with friends
Lose It! • Benefits? • Very easy user interface • Track calories fairly easily • Good database of foods • Scanning feature works pretty well • Social component • Detriments? • Tracking food is still a hassle
Map My Fitness • Track exercises • Map routes
Map My Fitness • Benefits? • Easy user interface • Fun to look at your routes • Social component • Detriments? • GPS feature is sketchy (in center city) • Only records “workouts” • Doesn’t record routine activity, (i.e. walking around the office, etc.) which can be significant • Huge battery drain
Fit Bit • Basically a pedometer on steroids
Fit Bit Lunchtime walk around Rittenhouse park • Shows step activity in 5 minute increments Walk to meeting after work Walk to the bank
Fit Bit • Monitor sleep activity
Fit Bit What happened on these days?!?!!?
Fit Bit • Benefits? • Tracks steps all day from all of your activities • Can even track sleep patterns • Very useful website • Social component • Links with Lose It! (but I haven’t gotten it to work) • Detriments? • Easy to lose
Conclusion • All of these programs have a defined purpose • If I can find a way to link Lose it! with Fit Bit it will be a lot easier • I love competition, so the social component is big for me • - I have a weight bet on Lose it! (to lose 40 pounds by September 1st) for an iPad2 • - I have a “stepping” bet during May (to get an average of 16000 steps per day – loser buys drinks
