Content-Based Spam Detection • content filtering is the most commonly used group of methods to filter spam. Content filters act either on the content, the information contained in the mail body, or on the mail headers (like "Subject:") to either classify, accept or reject a message. • The most popular filter is the Bayesian Filter, which is a statistical filter.
Bayesian Filter • Where: • Pr (S/W) • is the probability that a message is a spam, knowing that the word "replica" is in it; • Pr (S) • is the overall probability that any given message is spam; • Pr (W/S) • is the probability that the word "replica" appears in spam messages; • Pr (H) • is the overall probability that any given message is not spam (is "ham"); • Pr (W/H) • is the probability that the word "replica" appears in ham messages
What the Heck does that Mean? • Message is scanned • Message is given a score • Based on the score email is marked accordingly • The higher the score the more likely the message is spam • Algorithm assumes that 80% are spam
Advantages / Disadvantages • Trained on a per user basis • Based off users online activities • Number of legitimate emails will tend to be different • Word Probabilities are unique to each user • Very good at avoiding False positives • Susceptible to Bayesian Poisoning • Replacing text with Pictures
