Criminal Law vs. Civil Law • Criminal law = when somebody breaks a law he/she is a criminal. They have committed a crime. If guilty, punishment is often in the form of loss of freedom (imprisonment) • Civil law = when someone violates a contract. The violator is NOT a criminal. The punishment is usually in the form of compensation or retribution (money or something given to make up for the loss)
Contracts (Related to Games) • If a professional athlete enters into a contract with the owners of a team, what does this obligate the athlete to do? • What does it obligate the owners of the team to do? • All people who enter into a game also enter into a contract with the other participants in that game.
Can you think of other examplesof contracts people enter into? What do people agree to do? In exchange for what? In all contracts, to get something, you must give up something.
Social Contract • Are there unwritten rules and understandings for people in a community? • How does the concept of a “contract” play out in your lives (in the classroom, school, community, world) • In a social contract, everyone promises to give up the absolute right to do anything he or she has a right to do. In return, everyone receives the security that rules and limits can provide.

I Have A Dream • In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. • It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."
