Students selected a household liquid that many times makes its way into the waste water stream. • Serial dilutions of 5%, 2.5%, & 1.25% were prepared of the selected pollutant. • 50 ml “ponds” were developed at the above serial dilutions. • A control pond of 50 mls tap water was also prepared. • 10 viable leaves of Lemna minor (Duckweed) were placed in each “pond.” • “Ponds” were placed under a light bar for 7 days.
Toothpaste mixed with saliva was chosen as one possible pollutant.
Here a student prepares serial dilutions of 5%, 2.5%, & 1.25% of her chosen pollutant.
Duckweed for the “ponds” was retrieved from the stock supply.
10 viable leaves of Duckweed (Lemna minor) were placed in each of the four “ponds” of pollutant.
As “ponds” were completed, they were set on the lab bench below a light bar of fluorescent bulbs set for a 12hrs. Dark/12hrs. Light cycle.
