M & M’s Molarity and Molality
Concentration • The amount of solute in a given volume of solution • In chemistry, concentration goes by the stage name: Molarity (M)
Molarity • Is the number of moles of solute per volume of solution in liters • It's the easiest measure for most aqueous solutions. Moles of Solutemol M = molarity = = Liters of Solution L
Steps To Solve For Molarity • Set up you data table. • Covert: • Mass: into grams • Grams: into moles • work out the number of moles of the solute from the molecular weight (use T chart) • Volume: into liters (L) • Plug the numbers into your formula and solve.
Solve for Moles of Solute • To convert a volume and a molarity (M) of a solution to moles of solute, simply solve for moles of solute using the molarity equation: moles solute = M X volume
Molality • An alternative unit of concentration to molarity. • The molality of a solute is the number of moles of that solute divided by the weight of the solvent in kilograms.
Molality Moles of Solute • For water solutions, 1 kg of water has a volume close to that of 1 liter, so molality and molarity are similar in dilute aqueous solutions. M = Mass of Solution
Steps to Solve for Molality • Set up you data table. • Covert: • Mass of solute: into grams • Grams of solute: into moles • work out the number of moles of the solute from the molecular weight (use T chart) • Mass of solution: into grams • Plug the numbers into your formula and solve.
Solve for Moles of Solute • molality (M) = moles solute/kg of solution • To convert a volume and a molality of a solution to moles of solute, simply solve the above equation for moles of solute: • moles solute = molality X kg of solution
FYI • A solution that is 1.0 molar (written as 1.0 M) contains 1.0 mol of solute per liter of solution
Standard Solution • Is a solution whose concentration is accurately known.
Dilution • The process of adding more solvent to a solution. • The key to doing a dilution calculation: only water is added in the dilution
Dilution continued • Moles of solute after dilution = Moles of solute before dilution Remains constant Moles of Solute M = Volume (L) decreases Increases (more water)
