  2. Warm Up • Find the mean, median, and mode of each data set without the outlier. • 1. 14,11,51,12,13,11 • 2. 52, 50, 11, 49, 52, 50 • 3. 99, 96, 98, 95, 97, 31 mean: 12.2, median: 12, mode: 11 mean: 50.6, median: 50, mode: 50, 52 mean: 97, median: 97, mode: none

  3. Problem of the Day These are rits: 24042, 383, and 4994. These are not rits: 39239, 28, and 5505. Which of these are rits: 39883, 4040, and 101? Why? 101 is a rit because it is the same forward and backward.

  4. Learn to choose an appropriate way to display data.

  5. Depending on the data to be displayed, some types of graphs are more useful than others.

  6. Additional Example 1A: Choosing an Appropriate Data Display A table shows the miles jogged by five boxers. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a line plot or a line graph? Draw the more appropriate graph.

  8. Additional Example 1B: Choosing an Appropriate Data Display The table shows the height of some plants. Which graph would be more appropriate to show the data-a bar graph or a stem-and-leaf plot? Draw the more appropriate graph.

  9. Stems Leaves Additional Example 1B Continued Think: The table shows a number of different heights. It does not compare data in separate categories. A stem-and-leaf plot shows how often data values occur. So a stem-and-leaf plot is more appropriate than a bar graph. 1 1 1 4 2 6 7 3 5 Key 2|6 means 26.
