NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY “Virtual” faces are sometimes presented to participants in Dr. Tim Ketelaar’s lab. Participants are placed in cubicles where they either play a computer game with a real partner or a virtual partner. Tammy Calvano, graduate research assistant, enters data in Dr. Ketelaar’s lab. Ever wondered why groups of teenagers dress alike, talk alike, and try to “blend in?” This is a type of conformity. Conformity involves the changing of one's attitudes, opinions, or behaviors to match the attitudes, opinions, or behaviors of other people. Conformity occurs because there is some social pressure to behave like other people, even in spite of our true feelings and desires.
