PSI-Center goal • Needs all our features verified and validated • We have made great progress but have more to do

PSI Center needs to change its mission • Mission: Contribute to the development of future predictive simulation of large whole experiments and support small experiments that address fusion issues. • Mission may demand an increase in scope.
PSI-Center supports the advance of tokamaks • Contributes to future predictive simulation of large whole tokamaks • Advance validation science • Develop validation processes • Simulate whole plasma experiments • Develop both physical and numerical code features needed for whole tokamaks • Support small experiments that address tokamak issues
PSI-Center develops and validates code features needed for future whole tokamak and future EPR simulations
PSI-Center experiments contribute to solution of tokamak and future EPR issues
Increased scope of PSI-Center • Need to trade accuracy for speed (implicit time step?) • Need to develop error bars on computational results • Contribute to the development of validation science • Validate with more experiments • Have our features by March 2018
We have to be more rigorous • Make validation a hard science • BODs might help. • Validate with experimental data before you interpret experiment • Need quantitative agreement for valid interpretation • Logically you can not “learn” about an experiment from an invalid simulation
Summary • We contribute to future predictive simulation of large whole tokamaks • Advance validation science and processes through simulation of whole plasma experiments • Develop both physical and numerical code features needed for whole tokamaks • Support small experiments that address tokamak issues • Need to be able to trade speed for accuracy with error bars • Need to validate at higher parameters • Validate with any experiment • DOE small experiment get priority • We have to be more rigorous
Is NIMROD pessimistic? • Low Temperatures on SSPX • Low current gain on HIT • Low closed current on NSTX • Reconnection is slower even in two-fluid.
